Five Reasons You Need to See the Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers

When you see a tour called ‘Carnival of Flowers’ - you’d be forgiven for thinking it’s the sort of event that appeals mostly to gardeners.

But honestly, this incredible event is about so much more than flowers.

It is an explosion of colours, sounds and scents. It is a true experience, with music, entertainers, delicious food and of course, history.

There are many reasons you need to see the Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers.

It is a long established successful tour for us and is always extremely popular. Our customers have said it’s a similar climate up there. So our people head up and get an idea of what to be gardening here in Dubbo!

But here are five more reasons you should jump on this tour.

The Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers - A Historical Event

The event began in 1949. The local council saw an opportunity to use its “Garden City” reputation to promote increased economic activity following the hardships of World War Two.

The first event commenced with a street procession that stretched three miles in length, watched by an estimated crowd of 50,000.

Fast forward to 2021 - it has become a 10-day event, with 294,000 attendees recorded in 2019.

It is now the longest running floral event of its kind in Australia, as the premiere celebration of flowers, food, wine, culture.

Witness a True Team Gardening Effort

What truly blows my mind is the amount of preparation that goes into this event.

Each year, the city’s gardeners plant over 150,000 seeds, bulbs and seedlings, at key times - to ensure that there is a sensational display by Spring.

Watch these videos if you have a green thumb and want to learn all about the process needed to have the flowers blooming perfectly for Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers.

The two major feature displays of bulbs and flowering annuals are located at the Botanic Gardens, Queens Park and Laurel Bank Park. But there are so many other events held during this time - and dozens of other fantastic spaces to explore.

All the societies come together to showcase their work, including the Native Orchid Society, the Bromeliad and Succulent Society and the Geranium Society.

And while you’re there, make sure you also visit the Japanese Garden Ju Raku En, the St Luke’s Flower & Music Festival, Boyce Gardens and the Picnic Point Parklands (which is included in our tour.)

All The Sensory Delights

As I mentioned above - this event is not just for nature lovers.

Amongst the beauty of the Springtime flowers, you can indulge in local organic food and wine, experience plenty of local culture with live music performances - and even appreciate some classic cars.

There is also arts and craft, family events - and of course, the Festival of Food and Wine.

For three mouth-watering days you can sample the world-famous produce of Southern Queensland Country. There is also a Foodie Dinner Tour, High Cheese and a Talking Pubs Tour.

The Grand Central Floral Parade

Well now - this, right here, is the main event.

Line the streets with thousands of other revelers as performers, carnival characters and roving entertainment escort the stunning floral floats, as they make their way through the heart of the city, to Queens Park.

The floats and displays are absolutely world class. But it’s the atmosphere that takes the cake. The awe, the anticipation for what’s next - and the amazement. Each new float astounds the audience in a new way, and everyone shares in the excitement.
